The Left needs to take a deep look at itself
Daily Telegraph 04/10/26
I’m glad that the pretence that the Left aren’t Jew-haters is over. They can no longer bother with the crying that it was just Netanyahu they despised. Or just “the genocide” they abhorred.
The full-throated support for the Green Party’s motion that “Zionism is Racism” is them showing how much they hate Jews with their chests out.
They are proud of it. Yes, they are proud of their nasty anti-Semitism. So sickening. But at least there is now sunlight on their obsession. No two-state solution for this lot: nothing less than the eradication of Israel “by any means necessary”. Self determination for the Palestinians but not for the Jews.
The Green Party’s leaders and MPs have belatedly wrung their hands about what has happened to their party.
“I am deeply saddened the ‘Zionism is Racism’ motion has passed,” their MP Adrian Ramsay meekly bleated. “It doesn’t reflect Green principles or my own view.” Weak. Useless.
Even Mothin Ali, the Green deputy leader who openly pushed the motion, signed his name to a statement which said: “We will never tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment.”
Lies.
The Greens can now take the mantle of being the most openly racist mainstream British political party in history. They are calling for the destruction of the Jewish state while calling themselves anti-racists. What other state would they ever demand had to be dismantled?
And it chills me to think that Labour is pandering after the same vote. How low will they go? I’d like to think this would be a moment of reflection for them. A moment of reflection for our country. I fear it won’t be.
It chills me even more when I think about the effect on British Jews, especially young ones like my children.
When the UN first passed a “Zionism is racism” motion in 1975, which was pushed by the Soviet Union as an attack on the United States, it meant that other groups at my university tried to close down the Jewish Society because Zionists were racists and therefore we were all tarnished by that brush.
The mantra that “Zionism is racism” will now be chanted on university campuses and in schools. And who will dare defend the young Jews attacked by this? Instead they will be silent. Wringing their hands. Because they’ve seen what happens to those who dare to raise their heads above the parapet or even say they feel sorry for both Israelis and Palestinians. Look at what happened to Ed Sheeran.
I’m not discounting the anti-Semitism of the far-Right or from Islamic extremism, which has seen this lunacy turn murderous. Of course they are there too.
But the Left now needs to take a deep look at itself. It needs to stop pretending it is anti racist just because it says it is.
It needs to acknowledge the anti-Jewish hatred which has infiltrated its core. And it needs to fight it. Actually fight racism. But I fear it won’t.
