Lord Mandelson will be summoned to give evidence before Congress on his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Sources close to the US House oversight committee, which has spearheaded the release of millions of government-held files on the paedophile financier, said it was poised to issue the peer with a demand to testify in Washington.
It believes Lord Mandelson, who was sacked as British ambassador to Washington in September over revelations about his relationship with Epstein, may have crucial information about co-conspirators and enablers of Epstein’s crimes.
On Sunday night, Lord Mandelson announced he had resigned from the Labour Party, saying he did not wish to “cause further embarrassment” over his links to Epstein.
He is under renewed scrutiny after documents released by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) on Friday revealed the extent of his relationship with Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019.
In one exchange in December 2009, when Lord Mandelson was business secretary, he said he was “trying hard” to change Labour’s policy on bankers’ bonuses following requests from Epstein.
Evidence that Epstein sent Lord Mandelson $50,000 (£36,500) in 2004 and £10,000 to his husband in 2009 is also among the three million documents.
Other emails show them discussing arrangements for Lord Mandelson to stay at Epstein’s houses after the banker’s 2008 child prostitution conviction, while images also show Lord Mandelson in his underwear next to a woman in a white dressing gown.
